Make Together

Nothing feels quite like listening to beautiful music. Before watching Celisse Henderson perform #ConcertsForKids with Lincoln Center, prepare your own music amplifier for a cell phone to enhance the musical experience!

  • Using scissors, cut a rectangular slot the size of your cell phone base in the center of your cardboard tube.
  • Stick the base of your cell phone into the hole and test the sound.
    • Does your cell phone’s sound seem different at all? Louder? Any echoes?
  • If you have some, use two disposable cups to amplify your sound even more. Cut a circular opening into the side of two cups roughly the size of each end of your cardboard tube.
  • Stick either side of your cardboard tube into the holes in each cup and point the openings of each cup towards you!
    • How does that change the sound of your cell phone? Louder?

A phone sits in a hommade amplifier made of a cardboard tube and two plastic cups on a stone pavement

  • You’re ready for the concert! How does Celisse’s music make you feel? Can you describe her music in just a few words?

Sound moves in vibrational waves. Using something like a megaphone or a cardboard tube causes the sound to go in a specific direction and it vibrates off of the walls of the cardboard and cups, causing an amplifying effect!
