Make Together

In the world of kids and family music, Mike Messer is well known as the lead singer of popular Nick Jr. children’s group, The Dirty Sock Funtime Band. Mike’s music for young people is a mix of clever, fun, get-up-and-dance songs.

Mike shares a silly song about aliens with donuts for brains, and all they want to do is dance. But how did these aliens arrive? Before we sing along with Mike, let’s make an unidentified flying funky space instrument!

  • Place two paper plates facedown on a flat surface.
  • On the bottom of one plate, use markers, crayons, color pencils, or any other decorating tools to design your perfect donut. Is it strawberry? Chocolate with sprinkles? Lemon meringue with a graham cracker crumble?!
  • On the bottom of the other paper plate, design an alien flying saucer. What would it need to fly through space at light speed? Windows for aliens to peak out? Special flashing lights? A cool and colorful decal?
  • Flip one plate over and fill it with your shaker option (uncooked beans, rice, beads, or anything that makes noise).
  • Cover that plate with the other plate, and seal all of the sides shut with staples or tape.
  • You have created your double-sided musical instrument! Can you make a beat?

Now you’re ready to shake along with Mike Messer as we Do the “Donut Brain Alien”!
