Learn Together

Encouraging children to ask questions and make predictions can lead to some of the first steps in the Scientific Method! Help your child discover a love of science through sensory surprises like this one.

Materials

  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Food coloring
  • Small toys
  • Blocks or shapes
  • Muffin tin

Make Together

  1. Secretly place a few drops of food coloring, some small blocks or shapes, or a few little toys in each cup of a muffin tin.
  2. Cover each item with enough baking soda so that none of the items peek through.
  3. Have children make predictions about what could be underneath!
  4. Give your child a small cup, or even a dropper with vinegar, and have them add it slowly to each baking soda mound. The chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar will make a big fizz and reveal the surprise beneath!
