Let’s make foam!
- Combine ½ cup bubble bath, baby soap, body wash, or dish soap and 1 cup of water in a bowl. If you want to scale the recipe up or down, any 1:2 ratio of soap to water will make a fantastic foam.
- If desired, mix in a few drops of food coloring. When the colored soap and water mixture turns into foam, remember that it will be a lot lighter than the color in the bowl. Gently stir together with a spoon. Too much food coloring can stain hands and clothing, so be careful!
- Using an electric mixer, blender, food processor, or whisk, mix the ingredients at a high setting until stiff peaks of foam form. This should take about 2 minutes.
- Transfer your foamy mixture to a large bowl, sheet cake pan, water table, or container.
- After a while, the foam may start to lose its fluffy texture. Simply repeat step 3 for more fun!
- If you have a foam soap dispenser, you can skip the mixing and place the soap and water mixture directly into the dispenser. After a few pumps, foam should start to come out.
The possibilities for play are endless! Here are some ideas:
- Foamy Investigation: Use your senses to uncover what foam really is. Use a magnifying glass to look closely. What do you see? How many bubbles do you think there are? Place your head close to the foam and listen. Can you hear anything? Gently glide your hand across the surface of the foam. What does it feel like?
- Foam City Car Wash: Scrub your toy cars, trains, trucks, and planes with foam to make them squeaky clean.
- Dinosaur Excavation: Embrace your inner paleontologist by hiding toy dinosaurs or animals in foam. Use hands or spoons to dig through the foam and identify the creatures you find!
- Treasure Hunt: Place a variety of toys at the bottom of a container filled with foam. Reach your hands in deep and grab a toy, then, keeping your hands inside the foam, use your senses to try and guess what treasure you found.
- Rainbow Foam Color Mixing: Divide your soap and water mixture before mixing and make small batches of different colors. How many colors of foam can you make? What happens when you mix the colors together?
- Cooking with Foam: Use kitchen utensils with foam for some pretend kitchen play. What can you cook up?
- Ultimate Foamy Bath: If you made your foam using skin-safe and tear-free soap, you can dive right in! Place the foam in a bathtub or large container, put on your swimsuit, and step inside!
