Learn Together
Cooking together is a great way to practice basic math concepts and build vocabulary skills.
Materials
Ice Cream Ingredients:
- 1 cup milk or milk substitute
- 2 tablespoons your favorite sweetener (sugar, coconut sugar, agave)
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup diced fruit (strawberries, bananas, blueberries)
- Ice cream toppings
Materials:
- Ice
- 6 tablespoons salt (rock salt works best)
- Pint size sealable bag
- Gallon size sealable bag
Make Together
Shake it up as you make your own ice cream!
- Measure out and combine your ice cream ingredients into a pint size sealable bag. Make sure it is sealed up really tight.
- Place your pint size bag into a gallon size bag. Fill that larger bag with ice and salt. Seal that gallon bag up really tight.
- Now let’s SHAKE IT UP!!!
- Shake the bag like there is no tomorrow.
- Shake it up high, shake it down low.
- Shake it to the left, and shake it to the right.
- After about 5 minutes of shaking, your ice cream should be getting much thicker.
- When your ice cream has reached the desired thickness, remove it from the bag, add your favorite toppings, and enjoy your summertime treat!
Notice the physical reaction as you shake it up! The salt lowers the melting point of ice (just like how it melts ice on the sidewalk in winter), drawing the heat away from your ice cream ingredients and allowing them to freeze quickly.
Have an Ice Cream Dance Party!
- Dance with your shake-it-up ice cream bag as you join CMOM at Home to learn dances with Camille A. Brown & Dancers.
- Create a playlist of your favorite songs.
- Dance with your shake-it-up ice cream bag in slow motion. Then do it fast!
- Play a very real freeze dance!
- Create your own dance moves that incorporate your shake-it-up ice cream bag.
